Continuing medical education

Not how to earn credits — how to know which ones actually count. Requirements differ by state and license type, and the mandated topics are where clinicians get caught.

The mandated-topic trap

Most clinicians assume a renewal needs a number of hours. It usually needs a number of hours plus specific hours in specific subjects — opioid and controlled-substance prescribing, human trafficking recognition, implicit bias, suicide prevention, medical ethics, infection control. The exact list varies by state and by license type, and it changes when legislatures act.

Generic credits do not satisfy a mandated topic. Clinicians discover this at renewal, with a deadline in days rather than months, which is the worst possible moment to find out. Multiply it across three states with three different cycles and it stops being something anyone tracks reliably by hand.

What we do about it

We are not an accredited CME provider and we do not sell credits. We tell you what your renewal requires and make sure you have it — which is a different job, and the one that actually goes wrong.

Why a lapse is worse than it looks

A lapsed license is not simply renewed late. Depending on the state it can mean a reinstatement application rather than a renewal, a penalty fee, a gap you must disclose on every future licensing and credentialing application you ever file, and — if you practised during the gap — a matter for the board. Payers can also recoup payment for services rendered while unlicensed, sometimes years afterwards.

Compact privileges compound it: in several compacts, a lapse in the underlying license suspends your authority in every other state at the same moment.

Our CME team has its own site

CME is one of our three service lines and we work these engagements from this brand — submitting the form below reaches the same team. If you would rather look your own requirements up first, our CME site carries the state-by-state and license-by-license breakdowns.
